Ideas for Special Nights with Your Kids

“Special Night” is a family tradition we have where we schedule time with our kids each week for one-on-one time. You can read more about it here.

These activities can be anything you want. We typically let the kids pick the activity and some treat and we’ll just spend an hour or so hanging out with them.

  • Bowling
    • Just normal for fun
    • Bag of Skittles or Starburst and pick a color and do specific action for a color (i.e., spin around, between the legs, backwards, left-handed, eyes-closed, etc.)
    • Team-bowling — go for a combined high score! Strikes and spares count across the team (i.e., if I get a strike, the next two bowls score for my teammate)
  • Hiking
    • Take photos
    • Talk about plants
    • Where food comes from, where our water comes from, etc.
    • Hike in silence
  • Watch a movie or go to the movies
  • Read a book
  • Play a game (board or video)
  • Homework help
  • Project (build a drone, woodworking, assemble Lego set, etc.)
  • Learn a skill (soldering, needlework, etc.)
  • Go to lunch/dinner
  • Go for a drive (teenager learning to drive)
  • Go shopping
  • Listen to their favorite music album or playlist
  • Dance (maybe to the same playlist?)
  • Jump zone (trampoline park)
  • Amusement park
  • Play a sport — one on one practice time
  • Paint night
  • Ceramics class
  • Perler Beads
  • Sit around a fire
  • Foot rubs
  • Any of the above and bring a friend

Did we miss your favorite? Let us know in the comments and we’ll add it to the list!
